A very dear friend of mine told me recently: “Paul, do you know anything about the Balanced School Day?” He was assuming that I am reading everything available online and keeping on top of all relevent information. I had to admit that I had no clue what he was talking about.
Between the house fire, my professional life, and life (I think I still have one…) I feel as if I am in the dark on many issues. This feels especially true as I am not serving as a member of the executive for my location association as I have for the previous two years. My friend filled me in and explained it to with quite a bit of detail even adding a little personal bias here and there. As he explained to me, Ontario and Manitoba have already had conversation between their provincial governments and all interest groups including the teachers’ association and Saskatchewan’s govenment is starting conversations around the Balanced School Day.

During the local and provincial association section of my school staff meeting I brought this subject forward to teachers and tried to have a conversation with them ar
ound this topic. Not a single teacher had even herd the name Balanced School Day. I hadn’t even heard of this name until just recently. I did my best to fill them in with a few relevent particulars.
Looking around online I found a few .pdf docuements that I found quite interesting to read. I am linking to them here, here, here, and here for your perusal.
Did you know anything about this school day time schedule?
What do you think this would look like in Saskatchewan? Would it enable higher student outcomes?
